Pre-op instructions.
Please take the time to read the post-operative instructions before your procedure as well, so you have all the suggested items — food, ice packs, and so on — ready for after your surgery.
Before most appointments
- Do not drink alcoholic beverages for 1 day prior to surgery
- Have a light meal before coming to your appointment
- Take any pre-operative medications prescribed by the doctor

Instructions for patients receiving IV anesthesia
Your safety and comfort are our top priorities. If you are scheduled to undergo a procedure with sedation or general anesthesia, please read the following instructions carefully. Following these guidelines will help ensure a smooth and successful treatment experience.
Do not eat or drink for 8 hours before your surgery
Do not consume any food or liquids — including water, coffee, gum, or mints — for 8 hours prior to your scheduled procedure. This is essential for your safety during anesthesia. Failure to follow this rule may require us to reschedule your appointment.
Medications
- Take only the medications approved by our office or your physician, with a small sip of water.
- If you take medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, or another medical condition, please discuss this with us in advance.
- If you are on blood thinners (such as aspirin, Plavix, or Coumadin), make sure we have given specific instructions regarding when or if to stop them.
Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home
You must not drive yourself home after receiving anesthesia. A responsible adult must accompany you to your appointment, stay in the office during the procedure, and drive you home afterward. We recommend having someone stay with you for several hours post-op.
Clothing and personal items
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing with short sleeves.
- Do not wear contact lenses, makeup, nail polish, jewelry, or heavy perfumes on the day of surgery.
Illness or changes in health
If you develop a cold, sore throat, fever, or upset stomach within 48 hours of your appointment — or if there is any change in your health or medications — please contact our office. We may need to reschedule your procedure for your safety.
Smoking and alcohol
Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 24 hours before and after surgery, as both can interfere with healing and the effects of anesthesia.
