Three reasons come up again and again. Some patients simply want no metal in their body where a ceramic alternative exists. Some have thin or receding gum tissue in the front of the smile, where a gray titanium implant can eventually shadow through. And some carry sensitivity concerns — to metals generally, or from experience with jewelry or orthopedic hardware.

All three are legitimate planning inputs. What we will not do is oversell either material: titanium remains the most documented implant material in dentistry, and true titanium allergy is rare. The candidacy questions for a zirconia implant are mostly the same as for any dental implant: is there enough bone, is the gum tissue healthy, and is the bite stable? A CBCT scan answers the bone question precisely. Where bone is short, grafting can often build the site first — for either material.

Are zirconia implants really metal-free?
Yes. Zirconia is zirconium dioxide, a ceramic. Although it is derived from the element zirconium, the finished material is not a metal — it does not corrode, conduct, or behave like one. For patients who want no metal in the mouth, zirconia is the established implant option.
Are zirconia implants as strong as titanium?
Modern zirconia is a remarkably hard ceramic and performs well in the right case. Titanium remains more forgiving under certain bite forces and offers more restorative flexibility, with a much longer follow-up history in the research. This is exactly the kind of tradeoff the consultation exists to weigh — material selection should follow your anatomy, bite, and goals.
Who is a candidate for a zirconia implant?
Many of the same patients who are candidates for titanium implants: adequate bone, healthy gum tissue, and a stable bite. Zirconia gets particular consideration when the implant sits in the smile line under thin gum tissue, or when a patient has a documented metal sensitivity or a strong preference for a metal-free mouth.
