Sedation Dentistry in Washington, DC

Anxiety should not be the reason patients delay care they already know they need. Multiple sedation options available.

Patient treatment room at DC Perio & Implants, Farragut Square office

Direct answer

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients feel calm, relaxed, and comfortable during dental procedures. Options range from light (nitrous oxide) to moderate (IV sedation).

Why it matters: Anxiety is one of the most common reasons patients delay periodontal and implant care. Sedation removes that barrier.

Why see a periodontist: Periodontal and implant surgical cases benefit from a controlled, comfortable patient experience. Sedation also makes longer cases (like full-arch implants) much easier on the patient.

Next step in DC: DC Perio offers nitrous oxide and IV sedation for qualified procedures at both Washington, DC locations. A sedation consultation reviews your medical history and the best option for your case.

Sedation options available

Nitrous oxide ('laughing gas'): light sedation delivered through a small nose mask. You stay fully awake but feel relaxed. Effects wear off within minutes — you can drive home.

Oral conscious sedation: a prescription medication taken before the appointment. Deeper relaxation than nitrous; you remain awake but may have limited memory of the procedure. You need a driver.

IV sedation: medication delivered through an IV by a trained provider. You may drift in and out of light sleep but remain breathing on your own. Ideal for longer surgical procedures or significant anxiety.

Which option is right for which patient

Mild anxiety, short procedure: nitrous is often enough.

Moderate anxiety, longer procedure: oral or IV sedation.

Significant anxiety, complex surgical case (full-arch implants, multiple extractions, advanced grafting): IV sedation is usually the best option.

Medical history factors in. Patients with certain conditions may not be candidates for deeper sedation and we will tell you that openly.

Safety and monitoring

All sedation patients are continuously monitored — pulse, oxygen, blood pressure.

Our IV sedation is performed under proper certification and with the safety protocols required by DC dental regulations.

We review your medical history, current medications, and prior anesthesia experiences at the sedation consultation.

Common questions

Frequently asked about sedation dentistry

Will I be asleep?
Depending on the option chosen. Nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation keep you fully or mostly awake but relaxed. IV sedation can produce a light sleep state where you drift in and out, while still breathing on your own. General anesthesia (full unconsciousness) is not used in our office for routine cases.
Do I need a driver?
Yes for oral conscious sedation and IV sedation. Not required for nitrous oxide — the effects wear off within minutes of stopping the gas.
Is IV sedation safe?
When performed by a properly trained provider, with continuous monitoring and proper case selection, IV sedation has an excellent safety record. We review your medical history thoroughly before any sedation appointment.
Can I eat before my sedation appointment?
Eating instructions depend on the type of sedation. IV sedation requires no food or drink for several hours before the appointment. Nitrous oxide does not have eating restrictions. We give you specific instructions when the appointment is scheduled.
